650 on Matakana

We were very lucky to purchase this beautiful property flanked by towering oaks on the Matakana Golden Mile in 2015. Previously a hostel, we definitely underestimated how much love and attention 650 on Matakana needed but could see her shining in her potential glory.

Long time locals tell us that the old state home was moved on to the 1ha block in the 80’s and was quite a site to behold being lifted on to it’s block brick base. Weatherboard, Rimu, Matai, the nostalgic hand made window frames and the easy layout of an ex-state house has given us a very easy pallet to improve on. And the owners over the years have created beautiful terraced gardens that we’ve just added to creating hedged spaces easy to maintain.

The old garage in the entry served as a retail space for a homewares store for four years and has now been converted in to a two bedroom guest house. A section of the basement of the main house which stored Wonki Ware ceramics has been renovated to create the Guest Suite opening out on to a private garden hedged with Grisilinea and facing the towering oaks it’s a space with soul and beauty to enjoy the Matakana Coast.
